I hope all of you had a great summer and can enjoy what's left of it. Those of you who did not come in for your chiropractic adjustment during the summer, please make it a priority to see me and get that taken care of. Don't procrastinate!
Much has happened. I have a new weight loss program. The one doctors don't want you to know about as featured in Kevin Trudeau's new book. It's HCG and it is phenomenal!!!! I will be giving a seminar on it at the end of the month and I will be advertising it in the Buffalo News. Seating will be limited. How would you like to lose 15-20 pounds in 3 weeks? Secrets of the Most Interesting Chiropractor in The World
*** The next time you have an upset stomach, try drinking coffee. We've been told for years that coffee leads to an upset stomach. But roasting coffee beans actually creates a compound, N-methylpyridinium (NMP), that helps lower stomach acid. How it works isn't completely understood, but researchers found NMP lowers acid secretion in the stomach. The darker the roast, the better the coffee is for your stomach.
But wait!!! Not just any coffee! Drink what I've been drinking for the past year. It's called OrganoGold. It is the best tasting coffee on the planet! *** This year, I've told you that canned foods and cashier receipts have high levels of bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is linked to prostate and breast cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. It turns out that BPA can be found in most food and beverage containers (like canned foods and soda).
The recycling symbol on the bottom of containers tells which containers have BPA. Inside the symbol, you'll find a number one through seven. No. 1 means the container is BPA-free. Avoid the No. 7 – the container probably has BPA. This is commonly found in water bottles and baby bottles. Two through six aren't as widely used for food containers. But three and six can also be dangerous.
Look for foods in boxes or buy fresh. And instead of buying water in plastic bottles, buy a reusable plastic bottle. You can get a BPA-free Thermos water bottle at Target for less than $10. Stainless steel bottles also contain no BPA.
***Women (more so than men) lose bone density as they age. Women are also at higher risk of developing osteoporosis. Doctors and websites like webmd.com often recommend taking calcium supplements. Which ones? What do I recommend? Thorne's Oscap Plus or Premiere's Bone and Joint Complex.
Also,women should be walking everyday and doing weight-bearing exercises to build bone density. And eat healthy foods to fulfill your calcium needs. When calcium comes from food, the body absorbs it slowly to keep your blood calcium levels from rising. Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium. Yogurt is one of my favorite foods with several other benefits.
*** There's a way to get free shipping when you shop online. I love online shopping. It's convenient and many stores offer special discounts you only get online. But some sites rarely advertise free shipping. The website http://www.freeshipping.org/ finds all the useable codes. The site currently has more than 2,000 free shipping codes for vendors like Amazon and Home Depot.
Best of all, you don't need to enter any personal information to get the free shipping codes. But some of the offers are conditional and require a minimum purchase, while some offer shipping around $1.
*** A CBS news crew recently investigated a warehouse of used copiers and found more than 300 pages of data (including Social Security numbers and birth certificates). It turns out that most copiers made after 2002 store pages that have been copied. If you have a printer/copier/scanner/fax combination, you're even more vulnerable.
Many copiers work similarly to computers… They contain hard drives that store information, just like saving a file on a computer.
You can protect yourself in several ways. Use copy machines that only make photocopies – they only hold data long enough to print something once. Multifunction devices – ones that double as scanners, faxes, or printers – store the files for longer. Also, don't copy sensitive information on machines in public places like libraries or Kinko's.
You also can physically destroy the hard drive, and then recycle it. Or you can contact the manufacturer and ask a representative to explain how to erase the hard drive. (Many companies' websites and user manuals also provide information on how to do this.)
*** It doesn't always save money to turn off the lights. In fact, it could cost you more. If you will return to a room within 15 minutes, don't turn off fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs are highly efficient. It takes more energy to turn the lights off and back on, than to just leave them on.
The same is not true for standard incandescent bulbs. They not only take a lot of energy to turn on, but only about 10%-15% of the energy is used for light. The rest is heat coming from the bulb. In the summer, this increases the temperature in your house.
*** For much of the northern U.S., summer is starting to wind down. Soon, we'll have less sunlight and spend most of the winter indoors. But if you have been lathering on sunscreen or spending your summer inside, you might have a vitamin D deficiency. People who live above 40-degree north latitude only have enough sun to produce vitamin D from May to September. I recommend asking your doctor to order a vitamin D test sometime in September or October – this will show you if you are deficient. A vitamin D deficiency can cause lethargy and moodiness. (In worse cases, vitamin D deficiency can cause urinary incontinence and rickets.)
Moderate exposure to ultraviolet rays is good for your health. Sunlight (the broadest form of UV radiation) allows your body to produce vitamin D, which prevents diseases like depression and multiple sclerosis. Our body stores vitamin D so we have plenty to last through the winter. If the test shows you don't have enough vitamin D, think about taking a supplement. But talk to me about how much you'll need. Don't risk buying store brand Vit D. You don't know what you're getting! I carry 2 excellent brands in the office. A liquid and capsule form.
***Foods That Relax You!
Food Myths....Refined sugar and alcohol seem to have a relaxing effect on the body. In fact they often make you sleepy. But don't be fooled. After the initial ease of tension, the effects of the alcohol wear off, leaving many people tense and angry.
The same is true for sugar. After an initial sugar "rush"-the surge that leaves you feeling temporarily alert and clear-headed-many people feel exhausted. They typically crave more sugar to get them going again, and a cycle of highs and lows becomes a way of life.
Relaxing Foods at Breakfast
To keep your energy in balance and feel tension-free, eat a variety of the following healthful foods...
Breakfast....small piece of fish with dark rye bread...an organic egg on whole grain toast-or oatmeal cooked with raisins and cinnamon topped with toasted sunflower and pumkin seeds. The protein/carb combo will leave you feeling relaxed and focused-unlike a high-fat, high sugar breakfast-donut or muffin or worse yet a breakfast sandwich. In general, I don't recommend dairy products. Among other things, they tend to make some people feel heavy and congested.
Eat Away Arthritis
Cayenne, ginger and tumeric can bring marked relief from arthritis pain. Thes spices work by blocking the release of substance P, a brain chemical that transmits pain signals and activates inflammation in the joints.
Important: If you decide or would like to begin "spice therapy", let me know. I have these spices in a synergistic blend in supplement form.
Nutritional Supplements for Headaches
Headaches occur less often in people whose intake of certain key nutrients is adequate. let's look at these key nutrients:
- Magnesium (400mg a day) this mineral has no effect on tension headaches but is moderately effective against migraine and cluster headaches. Capsules or powder is the best. Not tablets.
- Fish oil (1000mg)or flaxseed oil (15 grams per day)These oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been associated with reduced migraine frquency and severity.
- Lecithin (200mg a day). This protein -sold as a powder can be mixed into beverages-reduces the symptoms of cluster headaches.
- Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin). Megadoses of this vitamin -400mg a for 2-3 months-have been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
Increase strength and balance!!!!
We are now carrying Power Balance wrist bands. These are the ones that are advertised on television and the ones most professional athletes and college athletes are wearing. You have to experience the strength and balance test to believe it. I've been wearing mine for a month and definitely notice a difference in my overall wellbeing and energy. We have a variety of colors and sizes and they're cheap too!
Well it's almost fall, and I have a full plate starting this month.
I will be out of the office from September 17-26. Pam will still be there for appts and supplements.
I will be in Widbey Island, which is near Seattle for an intense 9 day training and conference. This has nothing to do with chiropractic, but continuing my own education in helping people with self empowerment. I firmly believe healing starts here.
I will be lecturing to different companies here and elsewhere, in helping them with wellness and stress in their lives.
